Celebrity

Celebrity is an award-winning F1 hybrid tomato cultivar (Solanum lycopersicum) bred by Colen Wyatt at Petoseed and introduced in 1984. Developed in the United States, this determinate slicing tomato earned All-America Selections honors for its reliable productivity, vigorous regular-leaf foliage, and heavy set of smooth, globe-shaped red fruit.

Reaching harvest approximately 70 days from transplant, Celebrity is celebrated for its broad disease resistance package against multiple soil-borne and viral pathogens. The hybrid delivers uniform, medium-sized slicers with high cracking resistance and a balanced, classic tomato flavor well-suited for fresh eating and home preservation.

Origin and Genetics

Celebrity was developed by breeder Colen Wyatt at Petoseed in California and commercially released in 1984. As an F1 hybrid, it was selected for hybrid vigor, high yield potential, and wide regional adaptability. In its year of introduction, Celebrity won the prestigious All-America Selections award, solidifying its place as a standard home garden and commercial market slicing cultivar.

Botanical Profile

The plant features standard green, regular-leaf foliage and produces typical yellow Solanaceae blossoms. Although classified botanically as a determinate growth habit, Celebrity is frequently observed to behave with a prolonged fruiting period relative to more compact, short-season determinates.

The fruit develops as a smooth, globe-shaped slicer within the medium size classification. Immature green fruit ripens uniformly to a deep, consistent red across both exterior skin and interior flesh, exhibiting outstanding resistance to concentric and radial cracking.

Growth and Performance

Celebrity achieves maturity in roughly 70 days after transplanting. It is rated as a high-yielding variety capable of supporting heavy clusters of firm slicing fruit. The plants perform efficiently under full sun conditions in well-drained soil and are well-adapted for traditional open-field cultivation as well as large container culture.

Disease Resistance

A primary factor in Celebrity’s lasting prominence is its extensive disease resistance profile. The cultivar possesses genetic resistance against several major tomato pathogens:

  • Verticillium wilt (V): Resistance to Verticillium albo-atrum and dahliae race 1.
  • Fusarium wilt (F): Resistance to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici races 1 and 2.
  • Nematodes (N): Resistance to root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne incognita).
  • Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV): Inherited protection against TMV infection.
  • Alternaria stem canker (A): Resistance to Alternaria alternata f. sp. lycopersici.

Flavor and Culinary Applications

Celebrity produces a classic, balanced tomato flavor with an even ratio of sugars to acidity. Because the fruit retains firmness and resists splitting, it is widely utilized for fresh slicing in sandwiches and salads. Its uniform texture and high solid content also make it suitable for home canning.
