Mortgage Lifter

Mortgage Lifter is an open-pollinated heirloom tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) developed during the 1930s by M.C. ‘Radiator Charlie’ Byles in Logan, West Virginia. Grown as an indeterminate vine with regular foliage, this historic variety is widely recognized for producing large, oblate beefsteak fruits that ripen from green to a distinct pink hue.

Renowned for its heavy, sustained production, the cultivar develops meaty pink flesh characterized by a mild, rich sweetness and low acidity. Its dense interior structure and balanced flavor make it a prominent traditional selection for fresh slicing, summer sandwiches, and home preservation.

Origin and Genetics

Mortgage Lifter was bred in Logan, West Virginia, by Marshall Cletis Byles, known locally as “Radiator Charlie.” During the 1930s, Byles developed the variety and famously sold seedling plants for one dollar each, generating enough revenue to pay off his $6,000 home mortgage. As a stable, open-pollinated heirloom, it has persisted across generations under several naming variations, including Radiator Charlie’s Mortgage Lifter, alongside related regional selections such as Estler’s Mortgage Lifter.

Botanical Profile

The plant exhibits a vigorous indeterminate growth habit with standard green regular-leaf foliage and yellow blossoms. The resulting fruits belong to the large beefsteak class, featuring an oblate form with smooth skin that can display slight ribbing across the pink shoulders. Internally, the tomato possesses dense, pink, meaty flesh with solid structural integrity.

Growth and Performance

Mortgage Lifter is well-suited for field production in full-sun environments. Because it produces heavy fruit loads on continuing indeterminate vines, plants demonstrate a high yield potential and require staking or trellising to support the heavy branches throughout the growing season.

Flavor and Aroma

The sensory profile of Mortgage Lifter is defined by a mild flavor with low acidity complemented by a rich, gentle sweetness. The absence of sharp tartness allows its smooth, sweet notes to dominate both fresh preparations and cooked dishes.

Cultivation

To preserve varietal purity when saving seed, this open-pollinated cultivar requires adequate spatial isolation from other flowering tomato varieties. Field plantings thrive best in unobstructed sunlight where sturdy vertical supports can accommodate the plant’s sustained vegetative expansion and heavy fruit set.

Culinary Applications

Owing to its broad diameter and meaty texture, Mortgage Lifter is primarily utilized for fresh slicing, sandwiches, and salads. Its substantial flesh-to-seed ratio also makes it a dependable option for home canning and general preservation.
