NuMex Twilight

NuMex Twilight is an ornamental Capsicum annuum cultivar bred by Paul W. Bosland, Jaime Iglesias, and Max M. Gonzalez at the Chile Pepper Institute of New Mexico State University. Released in 1992 by the New Mexico Agricultural Experiment Station, this open-pollinated selection is notable for producing upright, cone-shaped fruit with a hot, sharp, and immediate pungency.

The variety is distinguished by its vibrant multi-stage color cycle, beginning with immature purple pods that transition through yellow and orange before maturing to bright red. Because the erect fruits ripen asynchronously above a compact canopy of green foliage, plants exhibit an array of simultaneous colors, giving the cultivar significant ornamental value.

Origin and Genetics

NuMex Twilight was developed at New Mexico State University by breeders Paul W. Bosland, Jaime Iglesias, and Max M. Gonzalez. Selected from an open-pollinated population of ornamental chiles, the cultivar was officially released by the New Mexico Agricultural Experiment Station in 1992. It is a stable, open-pollinated variety that breeds true from seed.

Botanical Profile

The plant exhibits a compact, upright ornamental bush habit with dense green foliage. Its blossoms are white with purple margins or purple-tinged edges. NuMex Twilight produces small, conical fruit with smooth surfaces that grow in a strictly erect orientation above the canopy.

Unlike many ornamental cultivars that emerge green or cream, NuMex Twilight begins with deep purple immature fruit. As the pods ripen, they progress through bright yellow and orange stages before reaching their final mature color of vivid red. This asynchronous ripening pattern creates a multicolor canopy with all four colors present at the same time.

Heat Profile

Although widely cultivated for decorative use, NuMex Twilight produces fully edible fruit categorized as hot. The heat is characterized by a sharp, immediate pungency rather than a slow, building burn.

Flavor and Aroma

The flavor profile of NuMex Twilight is defined by direct, pungent heat accompanied by slightly bitter undertones typical of small ornamental chiles.

Cultivation

NuMex Twilight is well-suited for both container growing and greenhouse cultivation due to its manageable, compact structure. The cultivar performs best in full sun with well-draining soil, delivering high yields of upright fruit held prominently above the leaves.

Culinary Applications

While prized primarily for landscape plantings, patio pots, and indoor ornamental displays, the peppers can be utilized in culinary preparations. They are suitable for making hot sauce and are commonly preserved through drying.
